YOUR OPINION: Cars are as dangerous as any other deadly weapon

QUINCY - I think I’m living on another planet sometimes with our Massachusetts’ judges. One judge feels sorry for a pedophile, so he lets him out of jail to abuse another child.

Then another judge lets John Hanrahan plead guilty for killing a fireman and injuring two others, then gives Hanrahan probation.

Why did Hanrahan receive probation?

Because he didn’t use a small caliber handgun, he used a 3,000-pound weapon to kill Brian Mello and injure Wolfgang Decker and Tom Newhook.

In Massachusetts, it’s acceptable to kill someone and then say I’m not responsible because I was driving a vehicle.

Not any different than when another inattentive driver turned his car in front of Jamie Cochrane, a Quincy police officer, killing Jamie. That driver also received no punishment.

Here we have two young men losing their lives, having their families destroyed, and the individuals who caused their death did not have to accept responsibility or receive any punishment for their actions.

Why?

Because the individual causing the deaths was driving a vehicle.

If you kill or injure someone while driving in Massachusetts, you are not held accountable by the courts.

Why can’t the Massachusetts Legislature and judicial system wake up and have justice for all?

House Bill 1464 needs to be passed, which would require Massachusetts’ drivers to accept responsibility for their actions.

The law would also prevent judges from abdicating their responsibility by requiring punishment for killing a lawful road user with a motor vehicle.

When are we going to learn that some Massachusetts drivers are as dangerous as a loaded handgun in a teenager’s hand?

Driving a vehicle in Massachusetts should be a privilege, not a right.
